Children in South Africa are just crazy about football, and with the World Cup just around the corner, excitement is at fever-pitch. Everywhere I go in the poor areas where Breadline Africa does its work, I see little children playing football in dusty streets, with homemade balls…

I’ve been so impressed by a special organisation called Phakamini – which means “empowered to inspire”. They have set up a children’s football club on some vacant community land in New Crossroads, a huge township outside Cape Town. Here local volunteer coaches work with the little ones, including a girls’ team. They’ve organised some sponsored kit – togs, nets and cones. There’s such enthusiasm – the balls are used till they fall apart!

When I chatted with the dynamic volunteers who run Phakamini, they pointed out their urgent need for locker-rooms, somewhere to keep their equipment and clothing safe, and where the little ones can change and wash in privacy.

So, please help me give the football-mad children of New Crossroads a double container. We’ll fit it out with proper lockers, storage for their equipment, and a safe, clean place to change and shower.

Even better, it can double up as a community centre, so everyone can benefit! And this would mean that after the World Cup tournament is over, and all festivities are over, and the visitors returned home – there’ll be a lasting legacy for the children here who love the game. So let’s give these little stars in the making something to remember the magic by!

For only £10 you can help us to give these little heroes a fully equipped locker room, with washing and storage facilities – and others in the community get to benefit too!

With heartfelt thanks,
